Roach Races

Most people run away from cockroaches. But in Australia, crowds gather to see cockroaches run away from each other! Cockroach racing is a “sport” that could have only been invented in the land down under. It all started in the early ’80s when a group of lads presumably got bored at a Brisbane, Queensland, hotel.

Cockroach racing is a gambler’s thing, and there’s often money involved. Australia’s not-so-glamorous response to horse racing, this one-of-a-kind activity, has since left the country’s borders, making it to the gambling tables of Las Vegas.
