The One-and-Only Australian Dollar

Australia’s currency is called the Australian dollar, but it’s more fun than its American counterpart. Minted at Canberra’s Royal Australian Mint, many Australian coins boast symbolic pictures of the nation that go way beyond the typical “famous historical personality” standard.

The five-cent coin shows a picture of an echidna, the ten-cent coin shows a lyrebird, and the twenty-cent coin has a platypus! Australians didn’t forget about their iconic kangaroos, and that’s why the one-dollar coin boasts a whole family of five. For the two-dollar coin, they chose a picture of an Aboriginal man.
