The Ecological Treasures of Tasmania
Known for the emblematic Tasmanian devil—the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world—Tasmania is an island state of Australia. While there’s wildlife pretty much everywhere in the land down under, it doesn’t get much wilder than Tasmania! With less than 500,000 residents, the island is the country’s least-populated and poorest state.
Aboriginal peoples inhabited Tasmania for thousands of years before the British invasion. Like most of Australia, European settlers first treated the island as an exile colony. Today, it’s mainly known for its highly diverse flora and fauna.
