Record-breaking Holiday Spirit

If you forget about the stinging trees and giant-sized lizards, Australia isn’t very different from any other Commonwealth country. For one thing, they seem to love Christmas as much as their British and Canadian counterparts. In 2013, the Richards family from Canberra even broke the Guinness World Record for most Christmas lights on a house by hanging a whopping 500,000 lights outside!

Remarkably, the record was beaten only one year later, and then again in 2021, when New York resident Tim Gay used 687,000 lights for a holiday display. Now that’s what we call a merry Christmas!
