Simon Cowell, the reality TV titan and American Idol mainstay, once owned a 2008 Bugatti “Veyron”—a sleek masterpiece worth a staggering $1.7 million. It was a custom black-on-black Veyron, one of only a few in America.

Despite the car’s jaw-dropping 1,000 horsepower and status as the fastest street-legal vehicle in the U.S., in 2008, Simon revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that he’d driven it only twice. Still, the auction house noted its odometer read 1,300 miles. So, either someone snuck in a joyride, or his memory faded faster than a one-hit wonder. In mint condition at its time of sale, this car was a speed demon wrapped in elegance.
