Hold Up, Airplane Crossing

Train tracks frequently cross roadways, but we bet you’ve never seen a highway and a runway coexist or even cross each other in the same area! This photo shows the intersection of the four-lane Winston Churchill Boulevard and the runway of Gibraltar International Airport. In fact, an airplane can be seen in this photo crossing while vehicles are held up at a distance.

According to the website Interesting Engineering, the road is stopped to allow landing planes to pass, and when it reopens. Even though this arrangement results in heavy traffic, tourists continue to swarm to Gibraltar to take advantage of its Mediterranean environment and selection of luxury and boutique hotels.
