Prince William has always shown great concern to global issues, especially when it comes to tackling environmental and natural catastrophes that could lead the world to a potential risk of global warming. He has proposed ideas for companies to make it sustainable and eco-friendly to make the climate better.
What is the Earthshot Project?
The Earthshot programme is the most prestigious project that aims to repair the earth by 2030. The prize is awarded by the Royal Foundation, Prince William, and his wife and is awarded to five winners that have shown great contributions to 5 simple aims over the year. Each winner is rewarded with a grant of £1 million. These goals include restoration and protection of air, ocean, nature, climate, and building a wastefree world.
The first prizes were handed out in 2021 by the Duke, he was joined by stars including Emma Watson, Emma Thompson, Mo Salah, and David Oyelowo. A concert was scheduled at the opening ceremony, which was powered by 60 cyclists pedaling to conduct energy, performed by Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, and KSI, who sang to spread an eco message.
The entire project was inspired by the Moonshot project by John F Kennedy. He had set out goals and prizes for anyone who reached the moon in a decade. This spread encouragement and awareness across the globe, and a great number of people took part in the mission. The duke hopes that this method could protect the Earth for the new generations and the people present now.
The 2022 edition
From the great response, he received from the 2021 edition of the project, he now wishes to see more nominations from every corner of the world with new ideas and plans for solutions to save the planet.
In 2021 the nominations came from 80 countries worldwide, from which 30 nominations were picked and moved forward towards the finalist selection. The prize money has also been increased to $1.3 million each. The previous year’s winners and 10 other finalists will keep receiving mentoring and support from the judges.
All their efforts would be recognized along with the newcomers in the 2022 programme. Nominations are open till March 4th, and each individual would be closely examined and assessed.
The judges are hoping to see their approaches towards a variety of pointers, such as transportation, agriculture, buildings, and urbanization of rural areas. Other than that, they are also focusing on food and little to no use of plastic in daily life and fashion, after Emma Watson made a statement when she attended the 2021 Earthshot Programme in Alexandra Palace, London.
Her dress was made from scratch using 10 dresses by Oxfam, another project that aims to end the injustice in our society that leads people to poverty and helps those who are poor. The judges for 2022 process include Sir David Attenborough, Shakira, Christiana Figueres, along Prince William.
